Our latest product review, from one of our own travel experts, will give you insight into a new trend: transparent packing cubes. It also comes with a gift for you at the end, so read on!

Our Firsthand Review

“This is how packing goes in my house: My husband packs his own bag in a flash—throwing in some shorts, a few t-shirts—and he’s good to go. Then, without fail, he’ll ask me: ‘Aren’t you ready yet?’

Now, if I were just packing for myself, I’d be faster; but I have tiny travelers to pack for. Parents and grandparents can relate to the mountain of kid-stuff one travels with when anyone under the age of 10 is involved.

Recently, I came across a new company that suggested its products could address common packing hurdles and transform the way I pack. I asked myself if this was really possible. Could collapsible plastic boxes really simplify my process and save me both time and space? (Two things we can always use more of!) Here’s what happened when I determined to find out.

Organization: Clear and Simple

EzPacking Cubes were designed by a mom. And personally, this mama is grateful! After packing for all three kids, I usually am up late the night before a trip frantically trying to put together my own bag. The difference the cubes made was that I could pack so much more quickly. Because I could easily see and organize what I was taking, they took a lot of the guesswork out of filling a suitcase.

I used the Starter Set, which can easily accommodate a week’s worth of clothes in a carry-on suitcase. I recently used these transparent cubes to pack for a six-day trip, but could have easily fit several more days worth of clothes had I needed to. It’s amazing how much each one holds. Their module construction keeps the bags from compressing easily, which prevents wrinkles as well. (After all, who wants to iron on vacation?)

The largest cube I used for pants, and was able to fit three pairs of jeans, two pairs of shorts and some leggings with more than enough room to spare. I put tops into the medium cube, which easily held all of my eight shirts. If you purchase the Complete Bundle it also comes with a handy shirt packing board. I actually wished I had had this to help fold my tops neatly and help them fit perfectly into the cubes.

The next smallest cube was used for all my extras—a clutch purse, belts, scarves, phone charger, jewelry and even my makeup bag. I was amazed at how well I was able to contain all those extra essentials. The smallest container was used for socks and underclothes, and again,  had plenty of space.

Because I could separate out my clothes, it was easy to see what I was packing and think through what was still needed. Once packed, the cubes fit easily into my carry-on suitcase, along with two pairs of shoes. The Complete Bundle also comes with shoe bags, which I think are a brilliant idea. This way, your dirty shoes aren’t touching your clean items.

My Starter Set did include a laundry bag, which folds up tiny for travel, but unfolds to contain all your worn garments once you reach your destination, and can even be used for the return trip to separate your dirty and clean clothes. (If you’re like me, I tend to overpack and almost always return home with clean outfits I never even used).

The cubes fit so nicely into my bag, and I was pretty proud of my neat and organized suitcase. I almost wanted the TSA to open my bag just to admire my work. And the good news is: if you get to the check-in counter and receive the dreaded news that your bag exceeds weight limits, you won’t find yourself knee-deep in clothing and personal effects—frantically shuffling and repacking on the airport floor. You can simply pull out a small cube and stick it in your carry on. No need to dig through things, and your suitcase still remains neat and tidy. EzPacking even offers a duffle bag that folds up small for travel, but can be pulled out and used as a carry-on, which is especially helpful for the trip home when you may need to bring souvenirs, your jacket, or anything else you’ve picked up on your trip.

My conclusion? I absolutely loved using the EzPacking cubes. My inner-nerd couldn’t stop smiling at how organized my bag was. No more digging through the suitcase looking for something, only to spill everything else out or leave it in a rumpled pile. The packing cubes are sold in the Starter Set or the Complete Bundle, but can be purchased individually as well. They also come in four different colors, so you can mix and match to suit your needs and your family. Ideally, I’d like to get a different color for each member of my family.”
