Join this Unforgettable Christian Cruise to the Mediterranean with Chuck Swindoll and Insight for Living
There are certain places you visit where you feel like you’re literally stepping through the pages of history. One minute you’re in the present and the next you’re in Renaissance Italy or second-century Rome or ancient Greece, five hundred years before Christ. Cynthia and I would like to invite you to join us on such an adventure . . . an adventure of traveling across time and into several remarkable cultures.
Experience with us the history and culture of the Mediterranean on both land and sea. Along the way, we’ll be introduced to many of our heroes at significant sites . . . people whose names you know well, such as the apostles Paul and John, as well as heroes whom you may need to get to know, such as Eusebius, Constantine, and Titus. Once you hear their stories and see the places they served, no doubt you’ll include them in your growing list of heroes. We’ll also retrace some of the apostle Paul’s early travels to first-century churches as well as visit landmarks of civilization from eras long ago. What a journey this will be!
In July 2011, we’ll set sail from the fascinating water-city of Venice, Italy, on the luxury liner MS Nieuw Amsterdam, a brand-new, elegant ship (not exactly how Paul sailed the Mediterranean!). We’ll travel in style . . . with exquisite accommodations, gourmet cuisine, and five-star guest services, all of which will exceed our expectations.
Our twelve-day journey will take us to cities rich in biblical heritage, such as Athens and Ephesus. We’ll also experience the intriguing traditions of Istanbul; the historical significance of Katakolon, Greece, near the birthplace of the Olympics; and the inestimable beauty of the Aegean islands of Mykonos and Santorini . . . each place with an incredible story to tell.
In addition to my teaching almost every day, you’ll gain great insight from our own resident “sacred historian,” Denver Seminary president Dr. Mark Young. Gifted dramatist Dr. Reg Grant will bring to life various characters at each location, and entertainer-ventriloquist David Pendleton will keep us in stitches. Like icing on the cake, we’ll be ministered to through music by the gifted and longtime friends of the ministry, soloist Steve Green and the duo-pianists Stephen Nielson and Ovid Young. And a newcomer to our ministry, the outstanding acoustic guitarist Dennis Agajanian will join our all-star program team.
Thanks for your interest in exploring the cradle of history with us—the Mediterranean. Take your time browsing this brochure. Picture yourself at each location. Dream a little. Let your spirit be stirred by the great men and women who have gone before, whom God used in the shaping of history. This tour is far more than a vacation; it’s a life-altering adventure you’ll treasure the rest of your years.
Cynthia and I can hardly wait to meet you and walk beside you through these marvelous places. Together, we will sense the power of God’s hand upon our faith and history.
Anticipating twelve great days with you,

Chuck Swindoll

Depart For Venice, Italy (Wednesday, July 27, 2011)
Cruise Begins in Venice, Italy (Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 11:00 A.M.)
Venice, Italy (July 29, Depart 5:00 P.M.)
With its palatial arcades, charming cafés, and canals filled with singing gondoliers, Venice stirs the hearts of all who visit. Yet even the quaint passageways and famous squares of this beautiful city have known struggle and conflict. Like the tides that threaten the foundations of this “floating city,” the medieval struggles between Catholicism and Protestantism were waged on the ancient streets of Venice. Art from all periods reflects this back-and-forth tension; the galleries and buildings throughout Venice evidence an undercurrent of Christian faith alongside a secular culture and lifestyle of license. A town known for luxury and art, Venice has been home to numerous Christian writers and theologians throughout history, making it the backdrop for a confluence of ideas and culture and a historic clashing of art and Bible.Venice, Italy (July 29, Depart 5:00 P.M.)

Split, Croatia (July 30, 9:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.)
Located next to medicinal, sulfurous springs and the beautiful Adriatic Sea, Split was a main cultural, trading, and traffic center of ancient Croatia. This extensive history is preserved in archaeological, historical, and cultural monuments like the magnificent Diocletian’s palace in the heart of town. Before moving to this retirement palace in Split, the Roman Emperor Diocletian directed extensive persecution of the early Christian church during one of the most severe periods of imprisonment, torture, and execution endured by the early believers. Persecution only served to spread the gospel as fleeing believers took with them the message of God’s forgiveness and redemption. Ancient buildings mark this historic struggle, bearing Christian symbols atop the pagan and Roman markings of earlier centuries.Split, Croatia (July 30, 9:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.)

Piraeus (Athens), Greece (August 1, 8:00 A.M. -  5:00 P.M.)
Often thought of as the cradle of Western Civilization and the birthplace of democracy, Athens’ history is evident in its Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman monuments. Biblical references to this great city begin with Paul on his missionary journeys, lecturing and preaching through the marketplaces of the ancient world. Acts 17 records his famous sermon to the Greeks after he encountered the altar to an unknown god. Paul most likely delivered this sermon in the Aeropagus or Parthenon, atop the ancient Acropolis.Piraeus (Athens), Greece (August 1, 8:00 A.M. -  5:00 P.M.)

Included Private Athens Day Tour
Piraeus is the main port of Athens—the biggest in Greece—and one of the most important in the Mediterranean Sea. It's the gateway to the wonders of a city that is home to over half the Greek population. On our tour, we'll drive through the city of Athens on our way to the Parthenon, Constitution Square, Hadrian's Arch, the Olympic Stadium, and more. Athens is dominated by the flat-topped hill of the Acropolis, home of the Parthenon temple, which is dedicated to the city's patron goddess Athena and is one of the most famous classical monuments in the world. We'll also see the Temple of the Wingless Victory and Mars Hill, where Paul preached to the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers.
Cruising the Dardanelles (August 2)
Istanbul, Turkey (August 2, 4:00 P.M - August 3, 5:00 P.M)
Also called Byzantium and Constantinople, Istanbul’s rich past is evident in its architecture and seen best in the Hagia Sophia cathedral. Dedicated to the Logos (the second person of the Holy Trinity) and regarded as the masterpiece of Byzantine architecture, the Hagia Sophia was the largest Christian cathedral built in the world for over a thousand years. In Nicea, just across the water from Istanbul, Roman Emperor Constantine convened the first great council of the Christian church after the New Testament period. The resulting Nicene Creed established the doctrine of the deity of Jesus Christ as taught by the apostles and reaffirmed the books of the New Testament, putting an end to disputes plaguing the early church.Istanbul, Turkey (August 2, 4:00 P.M - August 3, 5:00 P.M)

Mykonos, Greece (August 4, 1:00 P.M. - 11:00 P.M.)
Known around the world as a place of sun and serenity, the Greek island of Mykonos holds a simple beauty largely unchanged from the world of centuries past. Whitewashed walls and blue-domed buildings hide stone footpaths that crisscross a paradise of brilliant warmth and sumptuous food. Yet even this simple beauty, enjoyed by rest-seekers from around the world, reveals the presence of God. More than 250 churches, convents, monasteries, and votive chapels connect the faith of this ancient island through the simple, unadorned architecture first employed by the ancients. Panagia Paraportiana is the most famous (and most photographed) of these churches and consists of four small, whitewashed structures with a central, glimmering white church.Mykonos, Greece (August 4, 1:00 P.M. - 11:00 P.M.)

Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey (August 5, 7:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M.)
Ephesus was colonized by the Greeks around 1000 BC and later underwent expansions by the Romans. Now considered one of the grandest reconstructed archaeological sites of the ancient world, Ephesus shows in vivid detail what life was like during the times of the early church. In New Testament times, a six-mile-long circuit wall surrounded the city and wealthy commercial center that was home of the nature goddess Diana (Artemis). Next to Rome, Ephesus was the most important city Paul visited in his missionary travels and was also his home for nearly three years after his arrival around AD 53. Revelation 2:1–7 records a message from Christ to the church of Ephesus, admonishing it for forgetting its first love in the midst of enduring good works.Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey (August 5, 7:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M.)

Now considered one of the grandest reconstructed sites from the ancient world, Ephesus is one of the best-preserved archeological sites in the world. On our private tour, we'll first visit the Great Theater, which dates back to the Hellenistic period and is where Paul preached to the Ephesians. We'll visit a brand new excavation of covered terrace homes that reveals the beautiful mosaics and frescoes of the wealthy Romans. Afterward, we'll continue along the Marble Road, a sacred walkway linking the theater and the Celsus Library with Hadrian's Temple. This impressive Corinthian-style temple has beautiful reliefs on the porch, and the Ephesians believed that the Medusa head found there would protect the city from its enemies. These stone walls and colonnaded facades display the finest technology, engineering, art, and culture of the Roman Empire during the time when the early Christian church was just beginning to spread the gospel.
Thira (Santorini), Greece (August 6, 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.)
One of the most picturesque and photographed of the Greek Islands, Santorini’s harbor is surrounded by a cubist patchwork of whitewashed and blue-domed buildings that climb the cliffs rising from the water’s edge. We have no record of Paul’s having been on Santorini. However, this land of beauty and sun-ripened culture was the backdrop for his second missionary journey, on which he tirelessly trekked through modern-day Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, and Greece in order to share the gospel with those who had never heard the name of Jesus. Over a thousand years later, Santorini adopted the Christian faith, appointed its own bishop, and organized a Christian church. After the fall of Constantinople in 1204 AD, the Venetians took over the island and renamed it Santorini after Santa (Saint) Irini.Thira (Santorini), Greece (August 6, 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.)

Katakolon, Greece (August 7, 9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.)
The small fishing village of Katakolon is a gateway to the site of ancient Olympia, 25 miles to the east. The sanctuary of Olympia has the appearance of a park, and you can imagine the area 2,000 years in the past crowded with athletes, orators, merchants, and philosophers. This area housed the Temple of Zeus with its 40-foot statue of the god, the ruins of which we will see. Paul’s missionary travels most likely would have led him through ancient towns like Katakolon and inspired the metaphors he used of athletes competing for eternal crowns instead of perishable ones, like the example in 1 Corinthians 9:25.Katakolon, Greece (August 7, 9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.)

Paul’s missionary travels most likely would have led him through ancient towns like Katakolon and inspired the metaphors he used of athletes competing for eternal crowns instead of perishable ones, like the example in 1 Corinthians 9:25.
