You can learn a lot about the Bible in the classroom at Northwestern College or on the radio, but there is no better way to learn than by traveling to Israel, walking where Jesus walked. We are planning a tour of Israel March 3-13, 2011 and invite you to join us. You will see the Bible come to life as never before, tracing the steps of Jesus as He ministered 2,000 years ago.

I am delighted to announce that Dr. Michael Wise, chairman of Northwestern’s Biblical and Theological Studies department and one of the top scholars in the world on the Dead Sea Scrolls, will accompany us on the tour. Dr. Wise will lecture at a number of sites, providing a depth of understanding of the Scriptures you will have never experienced before. Another professor who specializes in the Old Testament, Dr. Ed Glenny, will also accompany us.

I will never forget seeing a new Christian baptized in the Jordan River on a trip to Israel several years ago. He bounced out of the water, pumped his fist into the air in utter joy and gingerly stepped out of the water. God had transformed his life and being baptized in the same river Jesus had been baptized in was the capstone!

On another visit to Israel a friend sat sobbing as we took Communion next to the empty tomb. He later told me, “I’ve known all along that Jesus was raised from the dead, but taking communion here today beside the empty tomb it hit me—it’s real!”

Dr. Michael Wise

Dr. Michael Wise, internationally recognized expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls and professor at Northwestern College in St. Paul, MN, has been profiled in Time magazine, Vanity Fair, National Geographic, the New York Times, Chicago Tribune and the Times of London. His international bestselling book The Dead Sea Scrolls Uncovered (1992) has sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide, and has been translated into seven foreign languages.

Dr. Alan Cureton

Since 2002 Alan S. Cureton, Ph.D. has served as president of Northwestern College, a private Christ-centered, biblically based liberal arts college in St. Paul, Minnesota which also includes Northwestern Media, a ministry comprised of 15 owned-and-operated radio stations throughout the Midwest.

During Cureton’s leadership, Northwestern has seen an increase in enrollment in all programs, re-established the graduate school, added four undergraduate programs, and began online programs to complement Distance Education classes. With nearly $40 million dollars in facility construction and acquisition since his arrival at Northwestern, the campus is anticipating the completion of the new Billy Graham Community Life Commons in May 2011. Under his leadership, the recent capital campaign generated over $23 million and included a $750,000 grant from the Kresge Foundation.

Cureton has over 30 years of experience in higher education and has served in numerous capacities throughout American higher education. He consults with institutions of higher education across the Midwest in his role with the Higher Learning Commission.

He is a 1976 graduate of Sterling College with a degree in Biblical Studies and a minor in Greek. His Ph.D. is in History and Philosophy of Education from Iowa State University. In 2007 he received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Iowa State University.

Cureton and his wife, Gayle, have three adult children and became first-time grandparents in 2009.

Dr. Paul H. Virts

Since September 2002, Dr. Paul Virts has been the Senior Vice President for Media at Northwestern College/Northwestern Media. He is responsible for oversight of Northwestern’s 16 owned and operated radio stations and one satellite radio network with a staff of 90 part- and full-time employees and an annual budget of $13 million.

Prior to joining Northwestern’s radio network, Paul was the Chief Operating Officer of Leading The Way with Dr. Michael Youssef , an international radio and TV ministry (Atlanta, Georgia), for four years. Before that he was the Director of Media at the KMA agency in Dallas, Texas that consults with a variety of Christian media ministries. A major client was the Israel Government Ministry of Tourism.

He has also served as a vice president for development at The King’s College (New York), director of client services and manager of corporate research at Christian Broadcasting Network (Virginia) and professor of broadcasting at Regent University (Virginia).

Paul spent two years as a researcher, administrator and consultant with Daystar Communications, Nairobi, Kenya.

Paul is an ordained minister and holds graduate degrees in communication from the University of Iowa and Wheaton College, an undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska and a diploma in Bible from Prairie Bible College (Alberta, Canada). Paul and his wife Viola have three children and five grandchildren.
